Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, 95, has passed away in hospital in Singapore where he was receiving treatment. The current president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa revealed the news of his death on twitter.

Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 40 years, during which time there was bloodshed, alleged persecution of political opponents and alleged vote rigging on large scales. In 2000 Robert Mugabe led a campaign to evict white farmers from their land, which was given back to black Zimbabweans. The former president of Zimbabwe was admitted to hospital in early April, although it’s not clear what illness he was being treated for.

A former minister was quoted in relation to the death of Mugabe “Sadly we have lost him. It’s a day we hoped would never come, but he has had a good innings and is now rested”.

The current president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa tweeted: “It is with the outmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former president, Cde Robert Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten, May his soul rest in eternal peace”.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones in this difficult time.
