Google Doodle is today honouring Rene Favaloro, an Argentinian surgeon. Rene Favaloro’s artery bypass procedure has saved countless lives in the past half a century. The name Rene Favaloro may not be recognisable but chances are you know someone whose life has been saved by him and his pioneering coronary artery bypass surgery.
This Friday would have been his 96th birthday as Google Doodle honour this surgeon. More than 16 million Americans suffer from coronary heart disease, a condition that occurs when plaque builds up inside the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscles. It’s for his development of a procedure that has saved countless lives.
In the 1960s, Rene Favarolo began to explore the benefits of coronary artery bypass surgery, or CABG, to treat these obstructions. Often pronounced as cabbage, CABG takes arteries or veins from other parts of the body, known as grafts and uses them to reroute blood flow around a clogged heart artery.
Rene Favarolo’s pioneering work began after he travelled to the US in 1962 and now CABG is now performed on nearly half a million people each year, reducing the risk of a heart attack and relieving chest pains. Well done Google for honouring a true pioneer.
