Google Doodle is at it again, this time its honouring Cesaria Evora.
Cesaria Evora is a Cape Verdean singer, who is being honoured on her 78th birthday.
Grammy winning singer Cesaria Evora is being remembered in a special Google Doodle on what would have been her 78th birthday.
Cesaria Evora was born on the 27th of August, 1941in Mindelo, Sao Vecente, Cape Verde. She has a musical childhood, and is rumoured to have grown up in an infamous house in Cape Verde that produced several other famous singers, these singers either trained or performed there. The list includes Djo d’Eloy, Bana, Eddy Moreno, Luis Morais and Manuel de Novas, she received her musical education there.
Cesaria Evora died in 2011 after an illustrious career spanning two decades. She specialised in morna, the traditional music style of Cape Verde with melancholic, poetic undertones. In 1985 she was performing in Portugal and was spotted by a producer Jose Da Silva that her career really took off. International success followed in 1988 with the release of her 1st commercial album, La Diva Aux Pieds Nus, this album was recorded in France.
On her Google Doodle, the singer is shown against a backdrop of a coastal town. It shows the colourful buildings similar to the port of Mindelo, where she was born, mountains loom above the seafront and boats are seen bobbing on the water.
Cesaria Évora was also knighted by the French Minister of Culture and Communications, Christine Albanel, she was made a knightess of the French Legion of Honour, she was also twice presented with the Merit of the Jury at the Kora African Music Awards. As if there is no end to her accolades, the philanthropic Grammy winning artist, was also ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme in the same stroke, she was also known for her humanitarian ways. She had a habit of performing without shoes on and it earned her the nickname “barefoot diva”, a lot of speculation was thrown about that but she later shed light on the issue by saying, she just wasn’t keen on shoes.
Strictly come dancing’s Motsi Mabuse has had to apologise after branding Blackpool ugly. The new strictly come dancing judge has had to apologise to the town of Blackpool. So, the strictly come dancing has already had to go through some grovelling and the show hasn’t even started yet, she had named Blackpool ugly in her autobiography.
She had first visited the seaside resort in 1988, writing in her book: Every dancer knows the town, which is the ugliest that I have ever seen”
