The officials at number 10 Downing Street have warned that Boris Johnson would push for an election on the 14th of October if the government loses. Boris Johnson said he did not want an election and progress with the European Union would be impossible if Members of Parliament won. Jeremy Corbyn on the other hand said the Labour Party was ready for a general election.
But shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, Tony Lloyd later said Labour would vote against any government plans to hold a general election before United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on the 31st of October.
A number of Members of Parliament have come together across party political lines in a fresh bid to stop a no deal Brexit, after Boris Johnson vowed to leave the European Union with or without a deal on the 31st October. When Parliament returns on Tuesday afternoon after recess, they are expected to put forward legislation understanding Order 24 – a rule that allows urgent debates to be heard. This bill would force the prime minister to ask for Brexit to be delayed until the 31st of January, unless the Members of Parliament had approved a new deal, or voted in favour of a no deal exit, by the 19th of October.
